I tried setting a parameter in the Model Parameters Table to reference a group of objects and it didn't work. Is this feature not supported? Do you have to create individual parameters for each object?

Yes, this is supported. Make sure you get the option in the On Set trigger that says "Set Object Property by Group" instead of just "Set Object Property".
The easiest way to do this is to sample the group in the toolbox and choose one of the properties listed there:
