I think the character limit is really only applied to UI table settings when creating bundles. If you can write a script using the bundle commands to initialize or manipulate your bundles, I believe you can use the addbundlefield() command, which has a parameter that allows for setting the character length of that field. I believe our devs do have plans about increasing control from the UI settings too, but I'm not sure how far out those changes may be.
