Solved: FlexSim download speed very slow currently

[ FlexSim 19.2.1 ]

Hi,

I tried downloading FlexSim 19.2.2 yesterday and today and it works, but I can only get a download speed of around 100kB/s. The download speed is the same also when downloading any other file from FlexSim.com

If I download from some other site (tried gimp) I get around 10Mb/s, so 100 times faster. I am downloading to Finland.

Is there something going on with the download server?

Hi Axel, I've had the same problem in the morning, download speeds of 100kB/s and eventually downloads timing out halfway through. We thought it may be related to the time zone difference, where some process such as an automatic backup or nightly build takes up FlexSim's server resources. Maybe you can try again during US business hours (say, around 15:00h) and check if it's back to normal then.

Download speed remains the same still now when the clock is 15:00 in Finland. Anyone from FlexSim that can explain this?

Hi @Axel Kohonen,

Speeds are "speedy" now as I test downloading the 880 MB FlexSim 19.2.2 installer, getting around 30 MB/s.

There is nothing special about our office location related to the data center where flexsim.com is hosted, so anyone with a reasonably fast Internet connection may also be able to hit such speeds. We have not restarted the server or done anything else to fix any issues.

I suspect that @Mischa Spelt guessed correctly about our server doing some maintenance or backups over night. When we have had speed troubles in the past and I checked with our hosting provider, this was the case. I suspect this is what happened to you earlier today.

Thank you for testing this!

Currently I am getting around 150-200kb/s. It is roughly twice the speed of yesterday and the day before. It seems that your servers are still doing something.

I will wait and check back later. A bit inconvenient to download during US office hours, when it is during the night here.

We're going to look into this issue, and possibly setting up an alternate download location.

It is weird that Finland and the Netherlands (Mischa) get so low speeds, but Germany (Jörg) gets a good download speed. And server updates do not seem probable as Mischa and Jörg got different download speeds almost at the same time.

I checked with my colleague in Finland and he gets similar download speeds as I, i.e. around 200kb/s so it is likely not an issue with my computer.

My download speed is good so that is not the issue either

No hurry, just wanted to check if there was something going on. The download speed has been very good at all earlier times that I have downloaded something from FlexSim.com.

Wondering if you could try another download to test the speed currently. I'd like to get a more recent baseline against which I can compare the changes I'm about to make.

Later this week I'll have you test again. The site will then be serving files from a different location.

Thank you for investigating this. I wonder what has changed as there has never been issues with this before.

When tested now the dowload speed started out at 700kb/s and then fell down to 300kb/s. After this it seems to fluctuate between around 200 and 600 kb/s. So better than before, but not as good as it has been.

Here a remark to make the story even stranger. I wanted to update to 19.2.3 so I pressed the yellow triangle and I downloaded with 9-11 MB/sec. Then installing didn't work (it is saying that FlexSim is still running) and I had that before and I solved it by using the msi. So I now I'm downloading the msi file with a whopping speed of around 350 kb/s. This is on the same pc within minutes after the fast download......

Anyone who has previously experienced slow download speeds at FlexSim's website, please give it a try again. We've recently implemented a new download server (and hope to add more in the future).
