Improving the Measurement Tool In FlexSim

Hi FlexSimmers,

Using the measurement tool in FlexSim, it's not easy to measure the exact distance between two points inside FlexSim. The level of accuracy of the distance between the two points depends on the points that we have selected in the Flexsim model. The following are the difficulties that I have faced

  1. Measuring Distance Parallel To an Axis

For instance, to measure the distance between the edges of two objects. The measuring tool will not give an accurate measurement. To overcome this difficulty, I have to use a visual tool to measure/check the distance between. Also , the line drawn by the measuring tool may not be parallel to an axis, which leads to an incorrect measurement

In the below picture, I get a measurement of 1.99 m

When using a visual tool , I get a value of 1.9 m which is more accurate

2. Measuring the Distance Between Items On a Conveyor

If I want to check the distance between two items of a conveyor. Using the measurement tool it will not be accurate. Still, we have to depend on visual tools to get a real picture of the distance between two points.

To solve these issues, an improvement in the measuring tool is required. Like the measuring tool in AutoCAD, which helps to measure the distances accurately. This tool is super important in visually validating simulation models where distance or space becomes a performance measure.

There are many other cases like the above-mentioned. Pls, share your thoughts on the same.

I was just able to measure the distance between two objects 2m apart to one hundredth of a millimeter using the tool and a mouse:

Thanks for the feedback. I understand that it is possible to measure the distance between points with accuracy using the measurement tool. But how we will ensure that the distance measured is parallel to an axis? The tool's precision can indeed vary depending on factors such as the specific points selected and the user's familiarity with the tool. Not all users may achieve the same level of accuracy, especially in scenarios where measuring parallel to an axis is critical. And is there any way to measure the distance parallel to an axis without any mistake?

@Arun Kr, more important would be a tool to select temporarily two or more objects as so(), so1(), so2(), … And this should be supported by the sampler tool. And maybe selected objects should be highlighted by a different line style.

Then you could write a script to evaluate distances by properties and methods of Vec3 class. A fetching tool should be only available in design tools. There are only a few scenarios where you need it in FlexSim. And what features do you want to choose? A center of a circle, a round, a midpoint, a point of a line. A model is a composition of different shape formats, scales, accuracy levels. At the end we define dimensions in simulation environment by object size completely independently from any shape.
