Set combiner output itemtype match on input itemtype

I have a a combiner with an input a item that is 'joining' one of four box of itemtype '1', '2' ,'3' and '4' that enter the combiner but when item output itemtype is a random type. How to I set the itemtype of the output to match the input order.

The quickest way I found was to just use some process flow.

you store the item type to keep at the combiner in a label at the combiner. You do the joining operation and assert the label value on Exit again.
