Even if you set a virtual distance for a network node and let the operator walk that route, the distance does not change.

Have you set the distance for both directions? The connection settings of a node only influence the connections from that node. For it to count for both, you have to set it in both connected nodes.
If the model is proprietary, you can either construct a small example model that shows the problem or ask a private question that will only be visible to FlexSim US staff.
