Using .fbx files is going to give you the best rendering/performance, which should make your 3D objects "lighter" if I am understanding your question correctly. You can still get some good performance with .3ds or .ac files, and .jt files will load faster than other formats, but may not import all the data as accurately. So .fbx is the format we recommend right now.
