Change 3DS Object Color

I have a imported a 3DS to represent my flow item.

I would like to change it's color as it progresses through the model. See attached example. In object2 I'd like to change it to red.

Also, what's the best way to index through changing 3D objects? for example, an assembly adding parts as it progresses through its build.

I don't know why some imported shapes can not change the color in the normal way. It happened with me too. But in your case I think That You can use the standard box and change the length to 3x2x1.

This shape used was just a quick example. Is there a better file format? I am using 3DS from Sketchup.

I think that 3ds is the best format, but *.stl and *.wrl (from solid and pro-engineer) are good too.

Part 1 Certainly you have looked into the manual here

Otherwise your question was asked long before this forum exists. You find some more information in the old community forum. Phil Bobo is an respected author of many absolute useful posts. The search keywords should contain his name and color there. Other keywords are invis and ac3d.

Part 2.

If you have an assembled product you could use the method of Shape Frames.
