Where can I read more about Item flow?

I'm having trouble modelling the flow of Items correctly. Where can I read more about this (I don't remember exactly how this works...)?

I would like one activity to start the flow of an item. Then I want this item to go through five different "item-activities" with different processing times, while the patients continues with the patient activities, until a specific activity which cannot start before the item-processes are finished (did this make sense)?

Thank you for helping :-)

I've attached a zipped file of material that Brittany used in an advanced training class for a specific client who wanted to learn more about item flow and specifically how it might be used to model a hospital lab. Inside the sub folder called Mini Lab is a Power Point presentation with some slides explaining item flow and a mini lab model that uses item flow. The main directory contains a description of a bigger lab model and the model file itself. Hopefully you will find these usefull.
