model running slower when using LAN lincense

Dear Flexsim Support,

I have observed different model run speed (different by more than 10 times), when I use own laptop vs a shared server machine in our organization as host for license server installation and license activation.

1. When I installed on my laptop the speed is high (Takes less than 2 minutes to complete 1 year simulation)

2. When I use license through a remote machine (installing the flexnet licensing server), the speed is very low, it is taking more than 20 minutes to complete the same model as mentioned in the point 1.

Could you please let me know what could be the causes and any known remedies to overcome this, as we need license server to be on a remote machine, so that every one in our organization using Flexsim can access the license through that machine.

Thanks & Regards

P. Praveen Kumar

@Sivakumar C,

This is really unprecedented - I've never heard of the same computer running models differently depending on the location of the license server. Let me make sure that I've properly understood your question. Here are the facts that I understood:

  • FlexSim Simulation Software is installed on your local computer.
  • You have installed a license server on your local computer.
  • You have installed a license server in a remote location.
  • These are the only two computers in this discussion - a local computer where FlexSim Simulation Software is installed, and a remote license server that is used only in Scenario 2 (below).

Scenario 1:

  • Your FlexSim network license is activated to the license server on your local PC.
  • Your FlexSim software configuration at Help > License Activation > License Server is set to be licensed by your local license server, using License Server Address 127.0.0.1 or some other FQDN that points to the local PC.
  • FlexSim software starts and gets properly licensed.
  • When you run your model, performance is as expected.

Scenario 2:

  • Your FlexSim network license is activated to your remote license server installation.
  • Your FlexSim software configuration at Help > License Activation > License Server is set to use the remote license server for the License Server Address.
  • FlexSim software starts and gets properly licensed.
  • When you run your model, performance is 10x worse than in Scenario 1.

There really is no mechanism that should cause this to be the case. It may take a bit longer under Scenario 2 for FlexSim to start as there is more latency when the software contacts the remote license server for a license. Also, the software and license server will continue to have a "heartbeat" every few minutes to verify license status.

Is there a good connection between your local PC and the remote license server? What is the ping time? Does the software properly get a license when it starts under both scenarios? Have you looked at the task manager to see that FlexSim is using resources differently under the 2 scenarios? Could there have been some other process going at the same time?

If everything is actually behaving as I outlined in the scenarios above, we'll probably need to have a web meeting to check this out. I've honestly never seen or heard of anything like this, and can't think technically how it would even be possible.

To be certain in both scenarios: The system has got the same power supply and battery state.

@Sivakumar C,

Another question - is your model repeatable? In other words, can you get the same results from the same model (under the same licensing conditions) no matter how many times you reset and run?

Model Repeatability (flexsim.com)

When you run your test of local vs remote license server, make sure that Statistics > Repeat Random Streams is enabled. This removes the variability across different model runs so you can make sure that you have a good basis for comparison between the two licensing scenarios.

Also make sure that you don't have any errors during your model run - meaning that if you're getting error messages in the system console as you run your model, those should be rectified before you try to solve other problems, like this licensing issue.

Hello all,

I know there was an issue earlier this year with the License check of FloWorks. Do you have an old version of FloWorks installed? If so: use at least version 20.1.2 or the latest LTS.

@Sivakumar C,

Were you using FloWorks? Did upgrading solve the issue? Did you learn anything else from the various suggestions?
