Reading/writing to an open Excel workbook

I want to read and write to an Excel workbook during a simulation run.

It seems the Excel file has to be closed for the excelopen command to work. Is this correct?

Is there a way to establish an Excel interface to an Excel file that is already open?

Hey @Bob G, you can check out this answer I gave to someone with a similar question trying to close Excel before reading/writing to it. In a comment, I mention that

Excel blocks write access from external programs to files currently open in Excel to protect data integrity of that file.
