Optimize Video File Size

Hi all,

I recorded a video that's a little under two minutes long at 1080p and 30 FPS. When completed the file size is nearly 1.5GB. Trying to put this video into a PowerPoint has led to the presentation crashing due to the size. Do you have any recommendations on 1) how to reduce the file size while maintaining good quality...maybe an optimal size and FPS? 2) How best to share these large video files if nothing can be done about the size?

Thanks for suggestions!

This is more likely a question about video codecs, rather than a typical FlexSim questions. Perhaps you find more informations at answer sites related to take videos. I suggest you look for h.264 or h.265 and HEVC.

Hi @Mason W,

I assume you've used FlexSim's built in video recorder to capture a model run? Now you're putting it into a presentation? According to FlexSim's user manual, FlexSim's video recorder uses h.264 compression by default.

I think @Jörg Vogel's suggestion to use the video compression feature directly within PowerPoint is a good one. It is the simplest thing to try to see if it makes a difference.

If you still need another solution, you could use a free tool like Handbrake to re-encode the video with different settings to try to shrink the file size. Going to a newer codec like h.265 could make a difference in file size. I've used this tool before and it is quite good. As for exact settings, it will largely depend on your video and how small the file size needs to be.

If you come up with a good solution or different settings for re-encoding, you'll have to let us know what worked for you, to help future community members.

@Jörg Vogel

Using the video compression feature within PowerPoint reduced the size by 95% so worked great for my needs!
