Can't add texture

Hi,

I am trying to add a texture to a 3d object. The texture will work on default objects like a box, but won't work for this object I have personally uploaded. I have uploaded it as a .stp and .3ds file and neither will show the texture. The texture is a .jpg file. Any advice?
