lmadmin service crashes on login

After attempting to upgrade my FlexNet Publisher from 11.12.1 to 11.14 I've come across an issue where after a successful login to the web UI the windows service lmadmin crashes and I am unable to progress further.

I'm running the licensing service on Windows Server 2012.

Windows Event Viewer gives the following error:

Faulting application name: lmadmin.exe, version: 11.14.0.1, time stamp: 0x57aa2c1c

Faulting module name: MSVCR90.dll, version: 9.0.30729.8387, time stamp: 0x51ea24a

Faulting package full name:
Faulting package-relative application ID:

I've uninstalled all existing versions of Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable and just allowed the install of the version that comes with the "lmadmin-x64_n6-11_14_0_1" package ver. 9.0.30729.17

Further solutions tested:

  • Full uninstalls and reinstalls of both x86 and x64 versions using the install guide FlexSimLicenseServer_Installation
  • Running the service as both Local System account and a server admin user account
  • Completed the migration outline in FlexSimLicenseServer_2017MigrationGuide as I was unsure this had been done already.

Any guidance on this one would be great, thanks.

@Kenan Aldemir,

I doubt this is the problem, but it is worth a try - did you ever attempt logging in from an alternate browser, like Chrome or Firefox?

@Kenan Aldemir,

Is your Windows Server 2012 installation fully patched with all applicable Windows updates and drivers?

@Kenan Aldemir,

Thanks for the detailed explanation, and for all the solutions you already tested. Sorry for the troubles.

In searching the Internet for the faulting module path, it looks like you were on the right track with uninstall/reinstall of Visual C++.

Still looking for more info...

@Kenan Aldemir,

All the other instances I found online with this Visual C++ module error seem to have fixed the problem by reinstalling the Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable.

I would guess that if your computer was fully patched with all Windows updates, and your Windows update settings were enabled to update all Microsoft products, that it would get the latest VC++ updates... Just checked some systems we have here to see what Windows updates options are available. Not sure how to enable updates for all MS products in Server 2012, but the option is there in Server 2016 and Windows 10.

Or maybe the best option would be, after installing lmadmin, install the latest version of VC++ 2008 Redistributable directly from Microsoft:

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/2977003/the-latest-supported-visual-c-downloads

That page includes a section for 2008, where there is the main install, plus a security update. You could try installing both of those and see what happens...

I'm not sure if those are 32- or 64-bit. That page doesn't specify. Perhaps the installers include both?

@Ben Wilson

Thanks for your suggestions.

I've been unable to resolve this issue by doing the following

  • Installed chrome and tried to connect. Crashes as the same point (after successful login)
  • I both reinstalled the included Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable and the newest (32+64-bit versions) both without progress.

    I ended up deploying it to a new server as I was unable to resolve this issue and was under time pressure. Looks to be working fine at this stage.

    Thanks anyways

@Kenan Aldemir,

Thanks for reporting back with your experience. Glad you got it working. Something was definitely strange with that install of Windows Server 2012. Perhaps some sort of corruption or other inconsistency in the Windows install.
