Tutorial Statistics Collector 2.3

Hi @jordan.johnson ,

since one of our clients faces problems with (getting in touch with) the Statistics Collector I´ve recommended to do the Tutorial. And I did the Tutorials today too, just to figure out if everything is fine and to renew my knowledge in this area. I´m sure within the next days I will have to answer some questions about this to my client.

Except the little failure Jörg Vogel mentioned about 2.2 in this thread:

https://answers.flexsim.com/questions/62030/wrong-parameter-in-tutorial-the-statistical-collec.html

the following stuff seems to not work correctly:

1. in Step 2 Point 13 you´ve changed the "Edit Event/ Column Dependencies" options from a table to another view. And for me it is quite hard to figure out what "By column requirement" could be for.

2. in Step 3 you are explaining how to create a calculated table. Sadly you only explain how to update the values manually and there is absolutely no hint how to show this data in a dashboard. Tryed out some stuff, did not work very easy/ good.

3. in Step 5 Point 1 to 9 I´ve created the Bar Chart but it showes not what your picture does (did you change anything in 2019.0 to break this?

4. in Step 5 Point 10 the description leads us to add another "Bar Chart" that has the same settings like the first one. I assume the right word here has to be "Pie Chart"

Since my question seems to be a mix of Bug report (not updated Manual in 2019) and wishes for making points better I didn´t know if an "idea" would be the better place for this. But I was sure it would be the best to make this private.

Point 1: I do need to update the screenshot and directions for that tutorial. "By Column Requirement" is most useful when you define a column set, and you want to choose which columns in the set are updated by a certain event.

Point 2: Since it is the Statistics Collector tutorial, it does not describe how to write queries that produce data suitable for charts; that would require a long discussion on update modes as well as chart data formats, which seems out of scope for this tutorial. There is reference material for each chart that explains how the data should be formatted, and there is reference material on the Calculated Table update modes, and how they work.

Point 3: Step 5.6 says to include the Input and Output columns. It does not say to include the Object column, which the chart above does. I will make this more clear in the tutorial.

Point 4: The chart type in the step is correct. The Pie Chart and Bar Chart draw tables with the exact same data format, so a Pie Chart and a Bar Chart can both draw the same table. The Pie Chart just wraps the bars into a ring instead of displaying them side-by-side on an axis. The instructions, however, need to elaborate that you should set the Pie Title, rather than the Bar Title, to Object. Otherwise, the steps are identical.

You posted it in the right place. These concerns feel mostly like bugs, and can be shipped without any backwards compatibility notes or new documentation. A bug is more "I tried this and it was confusing or didn't work", where an improvement or feature is more "I want the software to be able to do something that is extremely difficult more easily". Those are better for ideas.

As far as making it private, the only time I recommend making things private is if it contains sensitive customer information or models. For bugs, I want customers to be able to find the question, so that if they have the same question, they can see the answer.

Thanks for the fast reply. If you want you can make this thread "unprivate" ;-)
