Flexsim 64bit crashes, when loading web content on start

I start FlexSim. The Start Page is shown and while web content is loaded, FlexSim crashes. The problem exists and is tested on Versions LTS 17,18,19,20 and 18.2.3, 20.1.0. I think, it is mainly a graphic hardware problem, but it is interesting that 32-bit versions LTS 19, 20 and 18.2.3, 20.1.0 are running without this problem. Only the name characters of 3D objects are shown as black filled rectanglars in versions earlier than 20. These I have tested. I am through with the startup shooting hints till point 11. The event viewer tells me a problem with "libeay32.dll". I can create an error in the webkit32 files of the directory by renaming or copying a different file into the directory. Then FlexSim is running. I get an error message window pointing out on Start Page that the webkit isn't running with eror code 193. But I can build models, run models, open consoles, only web features are producing errors. I have copied the webkit directory from a different 32-bit version to an older 64-bit version without any progress.

My computer data: Windows 10 Home 64-bit system Version 1909, Intel UHD 605 graphic.

Why is it possible that a 32-bit version is running, while 64-bit crashes?

Regards Jörg

I attach a txt file with a message for error code 193 and print out of event viewer for provoking an error by hitting icon of Online content.

Hi @Jörg Vogel,

On this question, I assume you did check your graphics driver version? Are you using Intel graphics or something else?

Hi, @Ben Wilson, my question is a bit different: why is it possible that a 32-bit version is running, while 64-bit crashes? I can run every 32-Bit version without a problem. It is only the 64-bit version that makes the problem. And it is only related to the dynamic web content. If I switch this content off, I can run FlexSim. It is currently only on one machine: I upgraded from Windows 10s to Home by a little program from the store, which allows to do this once for a license. Then I did an upgrade to a new half year release of the system. And I can not run a FlexSim 64-bit by default installation, while an internet connection exists.

Yes, it is an intel graphic driver provided by the notebook manufacturer, I use. I read, intel has changed its policy to allow to install their newest drivers now also on machines which get driver updates by the machine manufacturers. At the time I had the problem there was a different policy active.

Hi @Jörg Vogel, thanks for the quick reply.

why is it possible that a 32-bit version is running, while 64-bit crashes

We'd have to debug directly on your computer, or another that duplicates the problem, to be sure, but the code path for the 32 and 64 bit functionality within the offending libeay32.dll is probably different.

it is only related to the dynamic web content

The crashing libeay32.dll seems to be part of WebKit's SSL implementation. FlexSim's dynamic content features request content from https://www.flexsim.com, and so accesses the functionality of the crashing DLL. There is a chance that a newer version of the offending DLL could fix the problem for you, but you'd have to test to be sure. The linked stackoverflow question has an answer with links to the OpenSSL project where you could get later versions of libeay32.dll to drop in place of your current version, if you care to test.

...install their newest drivers now also on machines which get driver updates by the machine manufacturers

So did you end up searching Intel's website for the latest driver for your graphics hardware? It is a strange thing how many issues are resolved by graphics driver updates - even issues that are seemingly unrelated. I highly recommended finding and installing the latest driver if you haven't already. It could clear up your "black filled rectangles" problem, and may effect this WebKit crashing issue as well.

@Jörg Vogel,

Thanks for trying these things.

So the issue persists with the driver update (which I see in your screenshot is the latest version from just a few days ago). Did you happen to try a libeay32.dll drop-in replacement?

What about the black rectangles issue?

@Ben Wilson, issue is solved!!

I had replaced libeay32.dll found on my system from oneNote and a VPN client as I had wrote my question. That hadn't changed anything. Now I have replaced the file from your suggested source under the link "an answer". The file itself is then at the link at the bottom of the page where you read “source to download“. And this solved the problem. I downloaded the last file of the list.

openssl-1.0.2u-x64_86-win64.zip

The black rectangles issue is solved, too: new graphic driver, Recommended OpenGL Context and no shadows.

Many Thanks for your help!

Ok, the error is infact inside of the dynamic content of FlexSim for all 64-Bit Versions I tested: LTS 17 and all mentioned in my question.

You deactivate all Dynamic Content in File > Global Preferences to run a 64-Bit Version.

Because the dynamic content is by default activated and FlexSim crashes while loading the Start Page, deactivate the internet connection on your device. Then you can run FlexSim and change the preferences.

Now you can run FlexSim without any problem while the Internet Connection persists. There isn't any problem to establish a concurrent net license over a VPN connection.

But NEVER hit any button or icon that connects to online content. If you do this, FlexSim crashes. You should customize the workspace, that it doesn't contain any such icons or menu items anymore.

I'd like to report that one of our clients experiences a very similar issue. FlexSim crashes approximately a minute after start with the Start Page visible. All UI controls and menu remain inaccessible. Both 20.0.6 and in 20.1.2 are affected.

We opened a model file to bypass the start page, and then disabled all dynamic content. This workaround worked.
