Hi @Gilberto A S,

FlexSim models are forward-compatible. That means that models built in older FlexSim versions should properly update and continue to work in newer versions of FlexSim.

FlexSim models are not backward-compatible - meaning that if a simulation model was last saved in a particular FlexSim version, that saved model may include features and data structures that are not compatible with older releases of FlexSim. Consequently, a model file will not open in a release of FlexSim older than the release the model was last saved in.

When an older model is opened in a newer version of FlexSim, it goes through an upgrade process that may change the underlying structure of the model. If saved, this model would no longer be compatible with its previous version.

When you open an older model in a newer version of FlexSim, it warns you to save the model with a different file name, so as not to overwrite the original model file with the upgraded version:

It looks like the model you attached was last saved in FlexSim version 16.0.x. It should properly open in version 16.0 or higher. I just tested and it opened fine for me in version 17.2.

If you are double-clicking your model files to open them, it's possible that an older version of FlexSim is opening as the default application. If this is the case, you can:

  • open your desired version of FlexSim software via Windows program menu or the program icon, then choose within the software the model you'd like to load
  • uninstall your older versions of FlexSim
  • edit Windows settings to change the default program for opening .fsm files to be your latest version of FlexSim.

Were you able to get your model opening in the latest version of FlexSim? Or find a saved model file compatible with your older version of FlexSim?

@Gilberto A S,

This article has some explanation about how licensing works across different version numbers. Short answer is, licenses are backward compatible, but not forward compatible. Your license's version must be greater than or equal to your installed software version in order for the software to be licensed.
